Finding Your Muse and the Motivation to Write

Anyone who has ever sat down to write knows that the hardest part isn't finding the right words—it's finding the motivation to start writing them in the first place. That's why we insist on building habits and discipline around writing: so you're not relying on that elusive and sporadic spark to get you going. However, you can't have discipline without a little motivation and inspiration - call them co-conspirators, brothers in arms, friends for life... They go hand-in-hand in the walk to achievement!


Whether you're a seasoned author or a hopeful beginner, staying motivated can sometimes feel just as daunting as the writing itself. So, how do you ignite that creative spark and keep it burning? Here are some practical tips to help you find and maintain your writing motivation:


1. Set Clear, Achievable Goals

Setting small, manageable goals can transform an overwhelming project into a series of achievable tasks. Start by setting daily or weekly word count targets, or allocate specific blocks of time for writing. These goals should be flexible enough to reduce pressure but structured enough to keep you accountable. Celebrate small victories to maintain momentum!


2. Create a Routine That Suits You

One of the best ways to stay motivated is to develop a writing routine that fits into your lifestyle. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Identify when you feel most creative and alert, and tailor your writing schedule to these peaks. Consistency is key; the more habitual your writing becomes, the less motivation you'll need to get started. Remember - discipline, discipline, discipline!


3. Designate a Writing Space

There are few things less inspiring than a dingy workspace (though a writer's got to do what a writer's got to do, and sometimes a confined space is all you've got!), and having a designated writing space can significantly boost your motivation. This doesn't need to be an elaborate office—it can be a quiet corner of your home or a favourite café. The important thing is that it's a place where you feel comfortable and free from distractions, and in the right frame of mind to put your thoughts onto the page. Whatever the space you choose, try to make it inviting and inspiring, perhaps with motivational quotes, comfortable seating, or a view that stirs your imagination.


4. Connect with Other Writers

Writing can be a solitary activity, but you don't have to go it alone. Joining a writing group or participating in writing forums can provide the support and motivation you need. Sharing your work can be daunting, but receiving feedback and engaging with fellow writers can inspire you to keep going. Plus, discussing common challenges can help you find solutions to your own - you may even find new ways to support one another and hold each other accountable!


5. Use Writing Prompts

Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started, and this is where writing prompts can be invaluable. They can kickstart your creativity and help you overcome writer’s block. You can find prompts online, in writing books, or even create your own based on random words or images.


6. Read Regularly

Reading is fuel for writing! It exposes you to different styles, voices, and genres, opening up new ways of thinking about writing. Whether it’s a classic novel, a contemporary short story, or an article in a magazine, reading can provide a much-needed motivational boost and remind you why you love to write. Don't limit yourself to your singular preferred genre, either - why not shop around and borrow some ideas from other styles?


7. Allow Yourself to Write Badly

One of the biggest demotivators is the pressure to write perfectly... STOP putting this pressure on yourself! Give yourself permission to write badly. Remember, the first draft is just that—a draft. It doesn't need to be perfect, and it doesn't even need to be good. The important thing is to get your ideas down on paper. You can always refine and edit later.


8. Stay Physically and Mentally Healthy

You mightn't have expected to see this tip make the list, but never underestimate the power of physical activity to boost mental energy. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and proper nutrition can have a profound impact on your mental clarity and energy levels. A healthy body often means a more productive and motivated mind.


9. Reward Yourself

Some people thrive at the promise of some external motivator, so why not experiment with setting up a system of rewards for meeting your writing goals. This could be anything from a coffee break after a successful writing session to a weekend getaway after completing a chapter. Rewards can serve as great motivational boosts (as can accountability systems, on the flipside!).


10. Remember Your 'Why'

Finally - but probably most importantly -, keep in mind the reason why you started writing in the first place. Whether it’s to tell a story only you can tell, to impact others with your words, work toward building a new lifestyle, or to fulfil a lifelong dream, it's certainly no secret that remembering your 'why' can be a powerful motivator.
