Crafting a Memoir | A Writer's Advice for Writing your Life Story

Updated: Apr 11

Are you ready to delve into the captivating world of memoir writing? 📘

We probably don't have to tell you that memoirs are one of the most popular, enjoyable and rewarding forms of writing - and bonus, one of the most favoured among readers! They're certainly one of our favourite reads at The Writing Studio! Whether you're looking to share your life's journey, impart wisdom, or simply preserve your memories, writing a memoir is a unique and fulfilling endeavour. But how do you transform your experiences into a narrative that not only captivates your audience, but also resonates with your readers? Let’s explore some key tips to help you craft an effective and memorable memoir.

1. Find Your Focus 🔍

A memoir isn't an autobiography that chronicles your entire life; it's a slice of your life that tells a specific story. You don't have to be a celebrity to write an engaging memoir (hello, Frank McCourt, Tara Westover, Bri Lee!), but you do need to have a hook and a message that will resonate with your readers. Start by identifying the focus of your memoir: what pivotal moments or periods do you want to explore, and what themes or messages are you looking to convey? This focus will provide a clear direction and purpose to your narrative.

2. Be Honest and Authentic 💬

The heart of a great memoir is authenticity - be honest in your storytelling! This doesn’t mean you need to share every detail (and certainly be careful around laws pertaining to defamation and slander as relevant in your state), but the moments you choose to include should be portrayed truthfully. Authenticity builds a deep connection with your readers and lends credibility to your narrative... If Brene Brown has taught us anything, it's the power of being vulnerable - see our fifth tip!

3. Show, Don’t Just Tell 🎨

Engage your readers by showing them your experiences, not just telling them. Use descriptive language to paint vivid scenes and bring your memories to life. Let your readers see, hear, smell, and feel the world through your eyes. This sensory detail helps readers immerse themselves in your story... Don't we all love to get lost in a story sometimes? 4. Develop Your Characters 👥

Yes, your memoir is about you, but it's also about the people who have shaped your journey. Flesh out the key characters in your story – family, friends, mentors, or even adversaries. Provide enough detail to make these characters real and integral to your narrative, but don't overdo it; be mindful of your memoir's message and pace.

5. Embrace Vulnerability ❤️

Writing a memoir often requires vulnerability. Sharing your struggles, failures, and fears can be daunting, but it's also what makes your story relatable. Vulnerability adds depth to your narrative and allows readers to see themselves in your journey... Vulnerability helps us connect - and truthfully, it can be very cathartic and help us process experiences through our writing!

6. Find Your Voice ✒️

Your voice is your memoir's personality. It should reflect who you are – whether that’s humorous, serious, reflective, or a mix. A consistent and unique voice helps to engage readers and gives your memoir its distinctive tone and unique essence. You can achieve this through playing with vocabulary, punctuation (to reflect accents and alike), and the details of your experience that you choose to include.

7. Create a Strong Narrative Arc 🌈

Like any good story, your memoir should have a clear beginning, middle, and end – a narrative arc that takes the reader on a journey. There should be a sense of progression, growth, or change by the end of your memoir, and some building tension along the way.

8. Don't Shy Away from the Hard Stuff 💪

Life is complex and often messy, and aren't our stand-out memories often the toughest times of our lives? The embarrassing moments, the hard slogs, the real moments that we learned through... Don’t shy away from exploring the hard or complex aspects of your story - these are often the parts that resonate most with your readers (aren't we all about adding value to our audiences? If we're not, we should be!). Addressing these elements can provide a more comprehensive and compelling picture of your life, and you can pick up on how far you've pushed the boundaries during the alpha- and beta-reading stages.

9. Edit Ruthlessly ✂️

Once your first draft is complete, it’s time to edit. Be ruthless in cutting out parts that don't serve your narrative focus, and always consider readers' feedback. Remember - a tighter, more focused memoir is often more impactful than a sprawling, detailed, mind-numbingly dull autobiography. We often hear questions such as, "my novel is at 55,000 words and I need to flesh it out to 80,000 to be taken seriously - so what can I add?" Our answer: it's about the quality, not quantity. Adding word count for the sake of word count most often simply detracts from the work's quality, and in this changing day and age, you need to be mindful of your pace.

10. Seek Feedback 🗣️

Before you consider publishing, get feedback. Share your memoir with trusted friends, family, or writing groups. We've already mentioned the alpha- and beta-reading stages, though finding those who will give sound and useful feedback can be tough (more to come in a later post!), so pay mind to who you share your work with. Finally, while constructive criticism can provide new perspectives and help you refine your story, one reader's opinion is not the be-all and end-all, and this is your story, your work. Use your best judgement, and always hire professionals when able... Trust us, it's usually worth it.

Writing a memoir is an act of courage and creativity. It’s about finding the extraordinary in your ordinary life and sharing it in a way that speaks to others. So embrace the process, be patient with yourself, and enjoy the journey of self-discovery that comes with it. Happy writing, and here’s to a memoir that truly resonates! 📖✨
